"During the time it takes to address an issue, we want to limit the number of customers exposed to that issue." The reported problems with Creators Update don't appear to be major — as an example, Cable mentioned a hangup with Bluetooth connectivity for computers using specific series of Broadcom radios.

But the block will keep users from losing access to parts of their PC's functionality, which seems like a fair reason to keep them off on the new software.

The latest update is the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update which was made available on general release on 17 October 2017 and came packed full of features including improvements to its mobile experience and creative capabilities.

That is more of a concern for home- rather than business users of Windows, but if you are running a Windows XP shop and looking to upgrade, there will be a cost attached.

Of course, there is a cost attached to not moving on from XP.

Support officially ended for Windows XP in April 2014.

Windows XP isn't eligible for a free update to Windows 10.

But it turns out that some users rocking Intel Clover Trail Atom machines were surprised to discover an unpleasant message while trying to get the latest Windows 10 Creators Update installed.

“Windows 10 is no longer supported on this PC,” the message said, advising them to not proceed with the install.

There is a degree of irony here — when Windows 10 was first introduced, Microsoft infamously prodded users into the upgrade and even lost a lawsuit after a California woman claimed she was forced to install the OS without her permission.

Now, eager users looking to jump into the newest version of the software are being told to pump the brakes.

John Cable, Director of Program Management for Windows Servicing and Delivery, wrote a blog post earlier this week to confirm that Microsoft has been deploying blocks to prevent the rollout from reaching devices that might be affected by user-reported issues, at least until the problems are solved.

"We decide what to block based on user impact, and blocking issues are a high priority for us to address as quickly as possible," he wrote.
